How to set up GoHighLevel: a beginner's checklist

By FixGHLLast updated

To set up GoHighLevel, start the 14-day trial, create a sub-account for the business, fill in the business profile, and add your users. Then connect a phone number with A2P registration, a dedicated email sending domain, your website domain, a calendar, a pipeline and Stripe. Build one workflow last and test it with a real contact.

This checklist follows the order we use when we set up a new account. Each step links to HighLevel's own help article, and every menu path was checked against the help center on November 2, 2026. HighLevel moves menus from time to time, so if a label looks different, the linked article will show the current one.

What do you need before you set up GoHighLevel?

Before you start, have your business details, logo, business address and time zone ready, plus login access to your domain registrar, your Google or Microsoft calendar, your Stripe account and your Facebook and Google Business pages. Setup stalls fastest when you have to wait for someone else's password or DNS login.

  • Legal business name, address, phone and the name of an authorized representative (used for phone compliance)
  • Your logo and brand colors
  • Login for your domain registrar or DNS host (GoDaddy, Cloudflare and so on)
  • Admin access to your Google or Outlook calendar
  • A Stripe account if you plan to take payments
  • Admin access to your Facebook Page and Business Manager, and Owner or Manager access to your Google Business Profile

How do you start a GoHighLevel account?

You start by signing up for the free trial on HighLevel's pricing page. Every plan includes a 14-day trial. Plans were listed at $97, $297 and $497 a month on November 2, 2026. Billing starts when the trial ends unless you cancel, so plan to finish the core setup inside those two weeks.

If you are not sure which plan you need, our guide to GoHighLevel pricing explains what each one includes. A single business can usually start on the $97 plan. Agencies that want to resell the software need the $497 plan for SaaS mode.

Should you set up the agency account or a sub-account?

Do almost all of the setup inside a sub-account. The agency account is where you manage billing, branding and your list of sub-accounts. The sub-account is where the business actually runs: contacts, calendars, phone, email, funnels and workflows. Even a single business works from one sub-account.

When you create a sub-account from agency view, HighLevel asks whether it is your client's account or your own. If you already have a snapshot, you can create the sub-account from it instead: open Account Snapshots, click Create New Account (+) next to the snapshot, enter the details and click Add Sub-Account. Our glossary explains what a sub-account is if the structure is new to you.

What is the GoHighLevel setup checklist?

The checklist below covers everything a new sub-account needs before it handles real leads. Work through it in order, because later steps depend on earlier ones. A workflow cannot text a lead until the phone number is registered, and a booking page looks wrong until the business profile and domain are in place.

1. Business profileSettings > Business ProfileName, address, time zone and representative feed everything else
2. UsersSettings > UsersEach person needs a login before connecting calendars and inboxes

10. IntegrationsSettings > Integrations, Payments > IntegrationsStripe, Facebook and Google Business Profile
11. First workflowAutomation > WorkflowsTies it all together

Some accounts also show a LaunchPad item in the left menu with guided setup tasks. HighLevel says it is a limited rollout, so it may not appear in yours.

How do you fill in the business profile and add users?

Open Settings > Business Profile, the first page in a sub-account's settings. Add your logo, business name, email, phone, website and physical address, then set the business time zone and platform language. Fill in the business information and authorized representative sections too, because they are used for phone compliance checks later.

Check the time zone twice. If it is wrong, appointment times and scheduled messages will be off for everyone.

To add your team:

  1. Go to Settings > Users and click + Add User.
  2. Enter their details.
  3. Under Roles & Permissions, choose Admin or User and set which modules they can open.
  4. Turn on Only Assigned Data if they should only see their own contacts and conversations.
  5. Click Save.

How do you set up phone numbers and A2P 10DLC?

Buy a number under Settings > Phone System, then register for A2P 10DLC in the Trust Center before you text anyone in the US. HighLevel states that A2P 10DLC registration is required to send SMS or MMS to US recipients from a standard 10-digit local number. A number that can text is not ready to text until registration is approved.

  1. Go to Settings > Phone System, open the Phone numbers tab and click + Add Number.
  2. Pick a country, filter the results and choose a number, then click Proceed to Buy.
  3. Complete any identity or address checks. US, Canadian and Puerto Rican +1 numbers need a one-time identity verification per sub-account.
  4. Open Settings > Phone System > Trust Center and register your brand first.
  5. Then create a campaign under A2P Messaging (SMS) > Brand & Campaigns. It shows as Pending until it is vetted.

Start registration on day one. HighLevel notes that even after approval, carriers can take several business days to receive the update. Toll-free numbers use Toll-Free Verification instead of A2P 10DLC.

How do you set up email so it reaches the inbox?

Set up a dedicated sending domain under Settings > Email Services, on the Dedicated Domain and IP tab. Use a subdomain that nothing else uses, such as mg.yourbusiness.com, so it does not clash with the mail you send from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Then verify the DNS records and set your From name.

  1. Click Add Domain and enter the subdomain.
  2. Let HighLevel configure DNS automatically, or add the records by hand at your DNS host.
  3. Click Verify Records. HighLevel says propagation can take up to 24 hours.
  4. Use the three-dot menu and Set Headers to enter your From Name and From Email.
  5. Warm the domain up with small sends before you email a large list.

Each user can also connect their own Gmail or Outlook inbox under Settings > My Profile, in the email two-way sync section, so replies show up in GHL Conversations. Our guide on GHL emails going to spam covers SPF, DKIM, DMARC and warm-up in more detail.

How do you connect your domain for funnels and websites?

Go to Sites > Settings > Domains and click Connect a Domain. Choose whether it is for a funnel or a website, enter the domain or subdomain, then either authorize the automatic setup or add the DNS records HighLevel shows you. Automatic setup works with GoDaddy, Cloudflare and Google Domains.

  • If you add records by hand, copy the exact A, CNAME and TXT values shown in your account.
  • On Cloudflare, set the records to DNS Only.
  • Allow anywhere from a few minutes up to 24 hours for the domain to go live.

How do you set up a calendar and sync it?

Create a calendar under Calendars > Calendar Settings with + New Calendar, then connect each user's Google or Outlook calendar under Connections so bookings land in their own calendar and busy times block new bookings. Each person connects their own calendar. One calendar receives bookings and the others are checked for conflicts.

  1. Click + New Calendar and choose Personal Booking for one-to-one calls.
  2. Set the name, host, URL, duration and availability, then click Confirm.
  3. Open Connections, click + Add New and connect Google Calendar or Outlook. Outlook sync works with Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online accounts.
  4. Pick the Linked Calendar where bookings should go.
  5. Book a test appointment from the calendar link and check that it appears in your own calendar.

How do you set up pipelines, custom fields and custom values?

Create a pipeline under Opportunities > Pipelines with one stage for each step a lead goes through, such as New Lead, Booked, Showed and Proposal Sent. Then add custom fields for the details you need to collect, and custom values for business details you reuse in emails and pages, such as your booking link.

  • Pipeline: click Create new pipeline, name it, add stages and click Save. HighLevel adds Won and Lost stages automatically.
  • Custom fields: go to Settings > Custom Fields, choose Contact or Opportunity, click Create field, pick a type and name it. Create these before you import contacts, so every column has a field to map to.
  • Custom values: go to Settings > Custom Values and click New Custom Value. Change the value once and it updates everywhere it is used. Our glossary explains custom values further.

Which integrations should you connect first?

Connect Stripe if you take payments, Facebook and Instagram if you run lead ads, and Google Business Profile if you rely on reviews or local search. All three live under Settings > Integrations, and Stripe is also under Payments > Integrations. Each one needs admin access on the other platform, so line up those logins first.

IntegrationWhereWhat you need
StripePayments > Integrations > ConnectA Stripe account you can log in to
Facebook and InstagramSettings > Integrations > Facebook–InstagramAdmin on the Page and its Business Manager; Instagram linked to the Page for IG leads
Google Business ProfileSettings > IntegrationsOwner or Manager access, and a business already verified on Google

Install the HighLevel mobile app (still listed as LeadConnector in some places) so you can answer messages and calls away from your desk.

How do you build and test your first workflow?

Build one simple workflow that matches your main lead flow, such as a form submission that creates an opportunity, sends a confirmation text and email, and notifies you. Go to Automation > Workflows, click + Create Workflow, add a trigger and actions, save it, test it, then switch it from Draft to Publish.

  1. Click + Create Workflow and choose Start from scratch or a recipe.
  2. Add the trigger, such as Form Submitted, and set its filters.
  3. Add actions: create or update opportunity, send SMS, send email, internal notification.
  4. Click Save, then Test Workflow, pick a contact and click Run Test.
  5. Switch the toggle at the top right from Draft to Publish. HighLevel is clear that draft workflows do not run for real.
  6. Submit your own form as a new contact and follow the lead all the way through.

If a published workflow still does nothing, our guide to a GoHighLevel workflow not triggering walks through the usual causes. Our workflow glossary entry covers the basics.

What we see in real accounts

The simplest mistake is a workflow that gets built but never published. It stays in draft, nothing fires, and the owner can't work out why.

Email is where most owners are caught out. Many send straight from their main domain, sometimes for cold outreach. Once enough recipients mark those emails as spam, the main domain gets burned and its mail keeps landing in spam, which is a huge loss because that domain is one of the most important assets the business has. The better approach is to set up a subdomain first and send from it, so if it is ever flagged, the main domain stays safe. Two smaller mistakes waste time: setting the sending address on every single workflow instead of setting the headers once in the email settings, and forgetting to warm up the new domain.

The phone number is the part people overlook most. People notice texts more than emails, so open rates, booking rates and conversions are higher. But A2P approval has its own procedure and policies, and owners who don't know them get rejected again and again. Every rejection adds cost and time, and many end up paying someone to sort it out anyway.

How long does it take to set up GoHighLevel?

Most of this checklist is in your control and fits inside the 14-day trial if you start early. A2P 10DLC approval and DNS changes are not, and they can take longer. That is why we start phone registration and domain records first, then build calendars, pipelines and workflows while they process.

If you would rather skip the setup work, our GHL setup service handles this checklist in your account, from the business profile and A2P registration through to a tested first workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first thing to set up in GoHighLevel?

Fill in the business profile under Settings > Business Profile: business name, address, time zone and authorized representative. Phone compliance, calendars and scheduled messages all rely on these details.

Do I need A2P 10DLC registration in GoHighLevel?

Yes, if you text US recipients from a standard 10-digit local number. HighLevel states registration is required to send SMS or MMS to US numbers. Register your brand, then a campaign, in Settings > Phone System > Trust Center.

Should I set up GoHighLevel in the agency account or a sub-account?

Set up the business in a sub-account. The agency account handles billing, branding and the list of sub-accounts, while contacts, calendars, phone, email, funnels and workflows all live in the sub-account.

Does GoHighLevel have a setup checklist?

Some accounts show a LaunchPad item in the sub-account menu with guided setup tasks. HighLevel describes it as a limited rollout, so it does not appear in every account.
